Today is July 14th. The playoffs were supposed to start July13thfor 12u fastpitch. Not only did they not start, but the standings have not been updated since July 2nd. As of this minute I have not even been informed of when and where they will begin. This is a joke. Many families plan their vacation time according to the paperwork we recieve at the beginning of the season. We don't get it until 5 days before the first game. Just once it would be nice for this to be accurate. These games mean a lot to these kids. After many years in this league it is no wonder myself and many others have moved on to travel ball. It is awful how little respect an organization that gets over 100.00 per child has for the people who pay it.

Now it's getting really ridiculous! It's Wednesday, July 15th, and nothing. No updates to standings, no info at all, nothing, on playoffs. I know we'll hear the excuse that their busy, no one is running our division, etc. but our girls pay as much as the rest and deserve just as much consideration as the others.
Bet we don't even have 1/2 a team by the time we get this info.
Should of started on the details of the playoffs about 2-3 weeks ago, not trying to figure it out at the last minute. Would of been easier on everyone...

All managers were kept informed of the status of the situation. Whether they elected to inform you as to the situation is an issue unknown to me.
I am sorry if your expectations have not been met.
The City which in the spring assumed responsibility for administering 12U Fastpitch was forced, due to financial issues, to withdraw.
This left us all with a gaping hole in the management of the division. I am the GM for 14U hardball - a 25 team division. I guess from your "they're too busy" sentiment I am not going to tug your heart strings much, but when no one else was available to address 12U Fastpitch I stepped up. Later, I was offered, and accepted, help from one of the 12U managers.
Prior to the playoffs' scheduled start date, much time was spent trying to figure out who would "host" ("host" means absorb the expense of fields, umpires and balls) for the 12U playoffs. The usual sustpects, Riverview, Wyandotte, Trenton, Allen Park and Grosse Ile, had already taken responsibility for other divisions. At one point, we had another volunteer and we thought all was good. But they, too, had to withdraw their offer of support. Ultimately, and rather than have no playoffs for the 12U's, it was decided that Riverview would host them (in addition to the 25 team 14U hardball playoffs) and sort it out afterwards.
There you have it.

way to go neill, i only wish that people would understand just how hard of a job it is to be a gm . people complain but no wants to step up to the plate, guess its just easier to gripe about a problem , then help solve a problem.have a good day.

Yes, great post Neill. To all the folks out there complaining about these "horrific" 2009 play-offs, the entire DBA board and all the folks who did GM this season invite you to step up and get involved next season. And I'm sure we are all more than happy to let some of the other organizations (besides the usual suspects listed above) volunteer their time and energy, not to mention the $$$ your association will need to spend and the Parks & Rec $$$ your city will be required to spend to provide field prep, umpires, trophies and game balls. Heck, a few of you are clearly close enough in proximity to do a "joint venture" for playoffs...think outside the box.
Can't wait to hear from all the new volunteers and additonal communities who will be volunteering for these duties next season! Thanks in advance!

I appreciate the comments from the 14U HB GM and the 10 FP GM. I had the 14U FP division, with only 11 teams, and it was at times a handful. Thank you to ALL of the GMs of the various divisions.
I find it amusing that the people who are complaining have not identified themselves. If you are going to complain, don't hide behind names like sbmom or cat. You should identify yourself, stand up, and volunteer to take on some of the responsibilities that you feel are being handled as a joke. You can arrange to get fields prepped, umps assigned, trophies ordered, and schedules arranged. I am certain each of the GMs would welcome some assistance. We can easily be reached by going to the contacts page.
Anyone can complain. Do something constructive, instead, and you will be surprised at what you can accomplish.
